"Absolutely fascinating to read how people created fertile soil and lush gardens

before Monsanto killed the soil and the gardens"

During World War 1 and World War II, citizen gardens sprang up across America to assist in the war efforts of the troops fighting in Europe and the Pacific. The gardens were referred to as Victory Gardens or War Gardens. Citizens planted 20 million such gardens across the United States. They sprang up in backyards and vacant lots, on school grounds, in apartment window boxes, and on rooftops. Similar gardens were planted by citizens in Canada, England, Australia, and New Zealand.
