During World War I and World War II, tens of millions of the gardens were planted and harvested by citizens to support the war efforts in Europe and the Pacific. Patriots planted gardens in backyards, vacant lots, public parks, school grounds, and on rooftops. Likewise, citizens of Canada, England, Australia, and New Zealand planted War Gardens were promoted and supported by the military and federal governments as a way to free up food to be sent to the troops fighting the wars.
